International Early Childhood Center in Rome

A child’s sense of community and belonging begins with their family, extending to peers and teachers, and then to the outside world. Marymount’s goal is to cultivate global citizens and foster the spirit of lifelong learning from an intercultural perspective.

As your child’s independence grows, so does their connection with others. This process encompasses a deepening appreciation of cultural identity, and the nurturing of unity through diversity.

The languages of children are many, and using pictures and stories, movement and voice, colors and words, our students are encouraged to be active thinkers and communicators, sharing their worlds and ideas.

Our play-based program paves the way for the development of higher-level thinking skills and builds self-confidence through exploration and discovery.

Inquiry-based experiences enable us to differentiate for the learning needs of each child. In the Early Childhood Center, we follow children’s interests and curiosities, supporting and empowering them in their quests, and providing opportunities to share their discoveries with families and peers. 

Children flourish when they are active and joyful and our focus on healthy living and physical well-being is at the heart of each child’s day at school. In the Playground, Outdoor Classroom, and Forest School, children are invited to express themselves through free play and exploration. In addition, every day children engage in Creative Movement or Physical Education sessions in the Early Childhood gymnasium.

A balanced, nourishing diet underpins our dedication to student wellness. Our chef crafts fresh, organic, and sustainable lunches and snacks which are tailored to seasonal variations and individual dietary requirements.

Acceptance and placement depends upon review of the application papers submitted. The Application form, list of required documents and application fees are all available here.

The documents to submit for review are: a completed application form, health form, teacher and Principal recommendation forms, copies of the previous school reports from the last two years (as applicable), and the application fee. Following a review of these materials the Head of School informs the parents of the school’s decision.

As spaces are limited early application in January/February is recommended for September entry. However, as we are an international school, applications are accepted year round, and applications made throughout the academic year will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Birth date entry is from October 31^st to October 30^th:
To enter Early Childhood a child must be two years old by October 31^st.
To enter Early Childhood 1 a child must be three years old by October 31^st.
To enter Early Childhood 2 a child must be four years old by October 31^st.
To enter Kindergarten a child must be five years old by October 31^st.

The school year runs from early September to late June.

The school runs Monday through Friday, and the hours are:
8:30 am to 3:20 pm for Early Childhood, Early Childhood 1, Early Childhood 2 and Kindergarten.
8:20 am to 3:30 pm for Grades 1-12.

EC1 and EC2 students have the option of registering for our Early Bird Club which runs between from 8:00 am to 8:30 am, and may also sign up for our Aftercare program which takes place daily from 3:20 pm - 4:40 pm.

Average class size is 16 students per class and the teacher/student ratio is 1:6. 

Early Childhood Center and Kindergarten classes each have a teacher and a teaching assistant and specialist teachers for Music, Art, Physical Education, Creative Movement, and Library.

In Early Childhood (2 year olds), September is a transitional month and students start school gradually over a period of time, working up to staying for lunch, then nap time and then the whole day. Some students may be ready to transition to a full day during the second week of School. During the settling-in period, parents are asked to be flexible while their children adjust to their new environment. An example might be: 1 week of mornings, followed by lunch, then a full day, depending on the individual child’s needs.

In EC1 and EC2, new and returning students generally follow a three-day transition period:

Day 1, students are dismissed before lunch 
Day 2, students are dismissed after lunch
Day 3, students transition to full day and are dismissed between 15:10-15:25. 

If necessary, in all grade levels, a personalized settling-in plan can be designed to accommodate any additional needs.

EC: students nap from 12:15-14:30.
EC1: nap time is available for students who need it from 12:15 to 13:30. 
EC2: Relaxation/Quiet time is included in the children’s daily schedule.

After School Activities are available for students from EC2 and run from 3:30 pm to 4:45 pm.

EC students do not need to be toilet trained by the start of School.  
Students entering EC1 (3 year olds) must be toilet trained by the start of School.

We accommodate allergy/dietary requirements which need to be listed on the Student Health Record document provided during the Admissions process.

Marymount requires all students in Grades EC through Kindergarten to wear a Physical Education (PE) uniform everyday, in addition to an Outdoor Forest School Uniform. Please find details here.

Children in EC through EC2 play and learn outdoors many times a day for a balanced indoor and outdoor educational experience. Students have access to the Early Childhood Center Playground, Outdoor Classroom and Forest School where they learn through guided discovery activities in a safe and natural parkland environment that is unique to Marymount. 

Bus service is recommended from EC2 on. However, EC and EC1 students’ parents may contact the Admissions Office to discuss the possibility of arranging bus service. Find more Bus Service information here.
